The Geos Group’s vessel MT Thun Britain has been shortlisted for the title of Tanker of the Year 2023. Voting is open until 18 October, so please vote now! This prestigious award will be presented at the Riviera International Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference, Awards & Exhibition on 7 November 2023 in Athens.
The Tanker of the Year Award recognises vessels that demonstrate excellence in design, construction quality, sustainability and safety. The shortlist is made up of recently-delivered vessels that set new benchmarks in operational efficiency and environmental performance, and make a positive contribution to the industry.
MT Thun Britain is a key part of the Geos Group’s growing fleet of tankers, and sails up and down the UK’s east coast and throughout the islands of Scotland. This nimble, state-of-the-art vessel is described by Tanker Shipping & Trade as follows:
“With its eco-friendly design, digital optimisation and creative shallow-draught solution, Thun Britain spearheads the next generation of sustainable tanker excellence. The eco-friendly product and chemical tanker Thun Britain sets a new standard for sustainable vessel design and efficiency.
Part of Thun Tankers’ fleet renewal programme to replace older ships with modern, low-impact ones, Thun Britain utilises several innovations to minimise its environmental footprint. With an optimised hull form, efficient propeller and high-quality machinery, the tanker boasts superb fuel efficiency and low emissions, compliant with the latest environmental regulations. Its hybrid battery system further enhances efficiency during peak load operations, while also improving safety and reliability.
Thun Britain’s unique shallow draught NAABSAMAX design enables access to tidal-restricted ports, increasing operational flexibility. This creative solution, tailored to customer needs, highlights Thun Tankers’ commitment to optimising its tankers for maximum efficiency and sustainability. Showcasing future-readiness, Thun Britain holds an LNG-ready notation, allowing its main engines to be converted to cleaner LNG fuel in the future.
The Netherlands-flagged chemical tanker has a length of 80m, a beam of 15m, a draft of 7m, and a deadweight of 5,300 tonnes. It is powered by a Wärtsilä diesel engine. Commercially managed by Erik Thun Group of Sweden, the vessel is classed by Bureau Veritas and insured by Swedish Club. The chemical tanker has eight cargo tanks with 5,500 m3 total capacity, cargo heating and an epoxy coating, and is IMO II certified. The vessel complies with IMO Tier III emissions standards and holds an IHM Green Passport.”
The other four vessels shortlisted for the award are: Akrisios (Capital Ship Management Corp), Yuan Rui Yang (COSCO Shipping Group), Antonis I Angelicoussis (Maran Tankers Management, Angelicoussis Group), and Hafnia Languedoc (Hafnia).
The Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference, Awards & Exhibition 2023 aims to deliver strategic, operational, commercial and technical insights, showcase the latest technology, and reveal market trends. The theme this year is ‘competitiveness and compliance in today’s decarbonising industry’, and the programme will include presentations, lightning talks, round-table discussions and networking opportunities.
